Dehradun in One Day

Sightseeing in Dehradun is a delightful experience. Being one of the oldest cities in India, Dehradun has many beautiful attractions that one must see when visiting the city. However, if you only have only one day to see Dehradun or you are just stopping for a while in the city on your way to Mussoorie or Shimla, there are some sights in Dehradun that cannot be absolutely missed.

The nearest airport to Dehradun is the Jolly Grant Airport, about 26 kilometers from Dehradun’s city center. It is best to arrive in the city early in the morning so that more can be covered within one day. Moreover, travelling within the city is also very comfortable as Dehradun is very well connected with Auto-Rickshaws, Taxis and Buses.

If you are arriving in the city early in the morning, you can head straight to The Museum in Dehradun. Also known as the Zonal Museum, this place has a huge collection of artifacts based on origin, sustenance and development of mankind. Another popular tourist site in Dehradun that is worth visiting is the Robbers Cave. Around 8 kilometers from the city center, this place is known for its strange phenomenon where a stream of water suddenly disappears and appears again after a few meters. Robbers Cave is also famous for family picnics.

By the time you finish Dehradun Museum and Robbers Cave, it should be around afternoon. Therefore, from there you can head to the famous Rajpur Road. This road has everything you can ever imagine. From restaurant, cafes, eating outlets to numerous shops selling all kinds of products. Rajpur Road has all types of restaurants from Mc. Donalds, Nirula’s to roadside buffets. After lunch, you can do some street shopping and also visit the Clock Tower, which is right next to Rajpur Road. Another street in Dehradun that is famous for shopping is the Paltan Bazaar, where one can purchase Dehradun’s famous Basmati Rice at a very reasonable price.

A trip to Dehradun is not completed until you have visited the Forest Research Institute and the Indian Military Academy. Both are located within 6 kilometers distance from Rajpur Road. The Forest Research Institute is sprawled over 2000 acres and situated in the center is the spectacular Greco Romanian Style building with six museums related to forestry. The Indian Military Academy started functioning from 1st October 1932 with a batch of just 40 cadets. Besides a war memorial and a museum, it also has a Shooting Demonstration Room and 18 holes FRIMS Golf Course, which are a major attraction among tourists.

For visitors who love adventurous activities like Trekking, Mountain Biking, Water Skiing, River Rafting and so on, Dehradun is the perfect place for them. Surrounded by lush green forests, hilly valleys and extensive wildlife, Dehradun attracts a lot of adventurous tourists. For all activities related to trekking and water sports, one can head towards the Asan Barrage. Located about 50 kilometers from the city center, Asan Barrage has a water sports resort, which facilitates many water sports such as water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing etc. Many buses are available from Dehradun to Asan Barrage that run daily.

For people on a pilgrimage, there are many religious places available around the city. For example, the legendary Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, which is located about 5.5 kilometers from the city center, is very famous among devotees of Lord Shiva. Other popular religious places in Dehradun include Guru Ram Rai Gurudwara, Laxman Siddha Temple, Chandrabani Temple, Buddha Temple and St. Thomas Church.
