Healthcare in Dehradun

The population of Dehradun according to Census 2011 was 578,420, where the male and female were 303,411 and 275,009 respectively. The sex ratio was 906 females per 1000 males and the literacy rate was 85.24%. The health care facility in Dehradun District is very similar to the one followed all over India. The district consists of private and public hospitals, formal and informal service providers as well as secondary and tertiary healthcare with single clinic doctors.

Healthcare infrastructure in Dehradun consists of three levels – Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Care Levels. Primary Care Level comprises of Sub – Centers (SC), Primary Health Centers (PHC) and Community Health Centers (CHC), where elementary health care services are provided. Secondary Care Level consists of Community Health Centers and District Hospital (DH), which are basically referral centers where more intricate facilities are provided along with basic specialist services.

Finally, the Tertiary Care Level consists of specialist and super specialist hospitals. It also includes the State Level Hospital. This entire system of Civil Hospitals, Dispensaries, Primary Health Care and Primary Health Sub-Centers and Drug De-addiction Centers provide facilities including public health education, family welfare, mental health care and control of communicable diseases in Dehradun.

Healthcare Infrastructure in Dehradun

Dehradun District has 1 District Male Hospital, 1 District Female Hospital (Level 3), 4 Sub-Divisional or Joint Hospitals, 1 Mental Health Institution, 2 Female Hospital (Level 2), 4 First Referral Units (FRU, Level 3), 7 Community Health Centers, 23 Primary Health Centers, 168 Sub Centers (Level 2), 1 Leprosy Hospital, 1 District TB Clinic, 24 State Allopathic Dispensaries, 37 Ayurvedic Dispensaries, Homeopathic Dispensaries and 2 Private Medical Colleges.

In terms of Human Resources, Dehradun District has 1 Chief Medical Officer (CMO), 4 Deputy CMOs, 6 Medical Superintendents at Sub District Hospitals (SDH) and CHCs, 9 Lady Medical Officers, 74 Pharmacists, 87 Health Supervisors (Male and Female), 14 Lab Technicians, 5 X-Ray Technicians, 18 Staff Nurse at CHC, 43 Staff Nurse at SDH, 74 Staff Nurse at DH, 157 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM) at Sub Center, 2 ANM at PHC and 9 ANM at CHC.

However, even though Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand, the district is still up coming in terms of healthcare. Dehradun currently has 104 specialist medical officers, however, it is still at a shortage of 21 specialists. Therefore, more medical staff is required in the hospitals.

Overall, since 2000 Dehradun has seen a continuous development and it is still developing. The health care facilities in the district are constantly improving through modern technology and education.
